Fall sports are officially back, which means busy practices, Friday night games, weekend tournaments and plenty of excitement around Cleveland. But with all that activity comes the possibility of an unexpected injury. One awkward landing or hard tackle can turn a great game into a trip for medical care. The good news? Not every sports injury requires a long emergency room wait. AFC Cleveland offers convenient urgent care for many common sports injuries, including on-site X-rays when appropriate, so athletes can get answers and start figuring out their next steps sooner.

What Are the Most Common Fall Sports Injuries?

Whether you’re playing football, soccer, volleyball, cheerleading or another fall sport, injuries can happen. Some injuries are obvious right away, while others become more painful or swollen over the next several hours. Some of the most common include:

  • Ankle sprains
  • Knee injuries
  • Wrist and hand injuries
  • Muscle strains and pulled muscles
  • Dislocations
  • Bruises and contusions
  • Possible fractures

When Does a Sports Injury Need an X-Ray?

It’s not always easy to tell the difference between a bad sprain and a fracture. Getting an X-ray can help determine whether you’re dealing with a fracture or another injury that needs additional treatment.  An X-ray may be recommended if you experience:

  • Significant swelling or bruising
  • Severe or increasing pain
  • Difficulty putting weight on an injured leg or foot
  • Trouble moving the affected joint
  • Tenderness directly over a bone
  • An obvious deformity
  • An injury caused by a hard impact or fall

Do You Have to Go to the ER?

Not necessarily. For many non-life-threatening sports injuries, urgent care can be a convenient alternative to the emergency room.

At AFC Cleveland, our AFC providers can evaluate your injury and determine whether imaging or additional treatment is needed. This can help you avoid an unnecessary ER visit while still getting timely medical attention. Of course, severe injuries require emergency care. If an athlete has lost consciousness, has difficulty breathing, experiences severe bleeding or has another potentially life-threatening injury, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

What Should You Do Right After an Injury?

Before heading to urgent care, give the injured area some attention:

Rest: Stop playing and avoid putting additional stress on the injury.

Ice: Apply a cold pack wrapped in a cloth for short periods to help with swelling.

Compression: If appropriate, a supportive wrap may help reduce swelling.

Elevation: Raise the injured area when possible.

Most importantly, don’t try to “walk it off” if something feels seriously wrong. Continuing to play on an injury can potentially make it worse.
